Calibrating Chromatography: How Tswett Broke the Experimenters’ Regress

چکیده
We propose a new account of calibration according to which calibrating technique shows that the does what it is supposed do. To motivate our account, we examine an early twentieth-century debate about chlorophyll chemistry and Mikhail Tswett’s use chromatographic adsorption analysis study it. argue experiments established his was reliable in special case without relying on either theory or standard experiment. suggest Tswett broke experimenters’ regress by appealing material facts common ground for chemists at time.

How I Broke the Confederate Code (137 Years Too Late)
We study a previously undeciphered Civil War cryptogram, limiting ourselves to pencil and paper, and discover not only a missive of military importance, but in the process, identify a new Confederate codeword. Our methods rely not only upon cryptanalysis of the encryption method but also on the exploitation of an elementary mistake.
متن کاملHow to Do Things with an Infinite Regress
Scientific method may be viewed either as an argument justifying a conclusion or as a procedure for finding the right answer to some question. Both conceptions occasion the problem of empirical regresses. According to the former approach, it is hard to say what the point of a regress is. According to the latter, we can solve for the strongest sense of singlemethod performance that could be cove...
متن کاملHow To Do Things With an Infinte Regress
Scientific methods may be viewed as procedures for converging to the true answer to a given empirical question. Typically, such methods converge to the truth only if certain empirical presuppositions are satisfied, which raises the question whether the presuppositions are satisfied. Another scientific method can be applied to this empirical question, and so forth, occasioning an empirical regre...
متن کاملTwo challenges for experimenters.
In recent years, several theoretical studies have indicated potentially interesting, even perhaps surprising phenomena that could be observed by experiment--but have not yet been studied in the laboratory. Here we give the background and motivation for two of these, with the admitted goal of stimulating those experimental studies. The two topics: (1) the production and study of amorphous alkali...
متن کاملThe Epistemic Regress Problem
The best extant statement of the epistemic regress problem makes assumptions that are too strong. An improved version assumes only that that reasons require support, that no proposition is supported only by endless regresses of reasons, and that some proposition is supported. These assumptions are individually plausible but jointly inconsistent. Attempts to explain support by means of unconcept...
